Kentik to Educate Operators on NetFlow and Flow-like Data at NANOG65

CEO Avi Freedman to share insights on how augmented flow improves visibility of performance and security of the infrastructure and application traffic

SAN FRANCISCO – Oct. 1, 2015 – Kentik, provider of the industry’s first cloud-based network visibility and analytics solution, today announced that its CEO and co-founder Avi Freedman will present on the myriad uses of NetFlow and flow-like data at NANOG65. Taking place on October 5-7 at the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth in Montreal, Quebec Canada, NANOG65 brings together network operators and engineers to explore advanced networking techniques, network with colleagues in the industry and discover the latest network applications.

In his session, Freedman will review flow and ‘classic’ flow analytics; uncommon sources of flow including OSS sensor software and configs, load balancers, IDS sensors, server-side monitoring software and nginx logs; and free and/or open source tools for gathering augmented flow data to help network operators address issues around performance and security of network infrastructure and application traffic. Attendees will also gain insights into a number of real-world use cases enabled with ‘augmented flow,’ specifically:

  • Detecting application-level attacks
  • Peer analysis by performance
  • ‘Lightweight’ network-viewed Application Performance Monitoring
  • Detecting and exposing customer security issues, compromised servers and end user devices
  • E-commerce bot detection

Freedman has decades of experience as a leading technologist and executive in networking. He was with Akamai for over a decade as VP of Network Infrastructure and then Chief Network Scientist. Prior to that, Freedman started Philadelphia’s first ISP (netaxs) in 1992, later running the network at AboveNet and serving as CTO for ServerCentral.
